Few are the books that connect with a reader in such a way as to transform their lives, it happens so rarely that one forgets that it can, just like falling in love if you can forgive the exaggeration. I should state first off that I'm an Nigella Lawson fan through and through I own all her cookbooks. The one that I adore above all else however isn't a new one but an oldie. Her first. How to eat. Published in 1998. At first I resisted buying it due to its cost and size/weight. I just don't have the space: seriously my books are taking over floor space. But that's another story.
Anyway, I was looking for something to read by Nigella and I would go so far as to read things she's even mentioned in passing and decided to bite the bullet and borrow it from the library. Just to try before committing to the real thing so to speak.
Yes there are no pictures but honestly they are not needed she describes both the food and the stories behind them with such eloquence that I felt like I was in her kitchen and she was taking me through the steps of what to make for dinner. Some people might think it excessive to devote a whole page to a recipe for marmite sandwiches but Nigella makes you feel like it's not only necessary but an offence not to.
The tattered old copy that I now own, was brought second hand online and makes me value it all the more. My favourite recipes from the book aren't even really recipes I love the ones she suggest either before or after a 'proper' recipe.
So if you're going to read any book I recommend then read this one.
